Screening

Holistic Speech Pathology - Screening - Speech language fluency literacy screening

What is a screening assessment?

Screening assessments are designed to quickly identify children at risk who may need a full diagnostic assessment of their speech, language, or literacy.

Where families are concerned about their child’s speech, language or literacy, parents or educators can request a brief screening assessment to take place in the clinic or education setting.

How does screening work?

Standardised screening tools are selected for each child, based on age and usually take about 30 minutes to administer. Information from key people is also collected to inform the screening. The results are then analysed and summarised in a report which will also be discussed with the school and/or parents.

If you have any questions about screening or would like to discuss screening for multiple children or classrooms, please contact us.

A brief assessment option that takes a snapshot of a child’s communication development to inform parent decisions about whether to have their child assessed more comprehensively. Screening can take place at the clinic, home or school.

An age-appropriate standardised screening tool is used to conduct an in-person screen with your child. It covers a snapshot of relevant areas of development for your child, including speech, language, fluency, pre-literacy/literacy and oral motor abilities.

The entire process takes 60mins and includes 4 elements that take approximately 15 minutes each. The elements include: brief consultation with parents/teacher, in-person screening assessment with child, written summary of findings and follow up discussion with parent/teacher.

Screening costs $144/child and includes: a pre-screening consultation, a brief assessment with the child, consultation with teacher or relevant others and a summary report.

A consult is a conversation with parents about their concerns. A screening assessment includes an in-person, brief assessment with the child and consultation with teacher or relevant others and a summary report. Both result in a clinical opinion about whether a comprehensive assessment is appropriate.

A consult provides an opportunity to discuss your concerns and receive a clinical opinion about whether an assessment is required. An enquiry is useful for getting more information about our services and speech pathology services, in general.
